Artist Bio
Jennifer Laurel Keller is an artist and freelance instructor living in Petaluma, CA. She was born into a creative family of educators and nature enthusiasts. Art appealed to her at a very young age. She attended Sonoma and Humboldt State University on the Northern California coast where she earned her art degree. Early in her career, she worked in San Francisco, Oakland, and Sacramento, CA and gained experience in galleries, frame shops, a televised art auction, and an art supply store. This in-depth experience with products, creation, care and sales of fine art was invaluable.
While working at the art supply store in Sacramento she took on the role of classroom coordinator and discovered the joy of teaching art workshops. She has a reputation for her relaxed and motivational teaching style and believes in helping people gain creative confidence. During the pandemic, Jennifer spent two years developing over twenty online classes, which are now available on Skillshare.
In 2022 her family relocated to beautiful Sonoma County where Keller is able to to incorporate her passion for nature and art into her lifestyle as much as possible.
Artist Statement
I’m drawn to organic, natural scenes that honor our environment. I prefer to add lots of color with acrylic paint into my landscapes in order to communicate the vibrant feeling that nature gives me. By sharing this beauty I hope to be a part of the movement to preserve and cherish the land.
In some of my series I enjoy using salvaged, vintage, collaged papers and found objects. This juxtaposition encourages people to make connections within the work, similar to uncovering an archeology site. I love to see viewers investigate the pieces and find the imagery and history peeking through the layers. I believe that there are so many materials that already exist in the world and I enjoy creating interest from cast-off items and giving them a new life.
I also enjoy plein air painting, which allows me to slow down and spend time in nature. Plein air pushes me to sharpen my skills as a painter and truly connect with a place. I love bringing my practice outdoors. People will visit with me as I work, which gives me the opportunity to demonstrate my process and meet interesting folks in beautiful places.
