True North is about finding your joy, or your true north. It's inspired by the view from Big River Beach in Mendocino, right before it flows into the Pacific Ocean. The steady waters and layers of forest are a sight to behold. The piece has many bits of ephemera, including:
- A photograph of a woman and a pony
- A vintage envelope from the Justice of the Peace in Sonoma, CA
- A butterfly
- Shells and plants
- A pink slip for a trailer from 1945
- A diagram about aviation from the Federal Aviation Agency Insrtument Flight Intructor written examination guide from 1966.
- A gold ribbon
- a hinge
- a clock hand pointing up (or pointing north)
These items create a story in my mind that may be different than the story in yours. I don't start with an idea for a narrative. It comes together after the piece is finished. I imagine this to be about a woman who had a pony as a child and grew up to become a pilot. What do you think of when you see this collection?
